We now have available a genetic DNA analysis that can identify which breeds are behind your dog’s heritage. Any specific breed that contributes at least 1/8th to your dog’s ancestry may be identified by breed, identity that follows all the way back to your pet’s great grandparents. Once the contributing breeds in your dog’s ancestry have been identified, it can be determined if your pet carries the genetic markers for many of the known mutations for those specific breeds. The genetic markers, if present, signal a predisposition to certain health conditions. For example: if your dog is part Collie or Australian Shepherd, does it carry the MDR1 genetic mutation predisposing sensitivity to common drugs like anesthetics or pain medications, or ivermectin in heartworm prevention, etc.??? Knowledge is power and having this information helps us make better individual medical decisions for your dog.
In our hospital when we send in DNA profiles, our team and clients contribute their best guess for breeds based on the dog’s size, behavior, and appearance. It is always fun when results come back to see who was closest, or when with all the observation guesses, no one came close to choosing the dog’s actual genetic heritage!! (The mixed breed dog that “looks like” a Labrador and has no identified Lab genes in his DNA!)
One of the most valuable keys to understanding your dog is to understand its genetics. That starts with its DNA. The extreme differences between the breeds (from Chihuahua to Great Dane) depend on very small alterations in the DNA from breed to breed.
